Red Ribbons

“ For hours late into the October morning, long after they had finished breakfast and as coffee turned cold in their cups, the two old women talked of their yesterdays. They recalled young girls in red ribbons who, watching children play, dream of tomorrows. And they talked, as on countless occasions before, of the evaporation of their tomorrows, a narrowing circle growing ever smaller. ”
