“It was during the early 1960's that I discovered printmaking, particularly etching and aquatint. There was something quite extraordinary about the feel of a needle exposing the skin of a zinc plate and the tactile sensations that came frome the sharp edge of a metal scraper. I found in the starkness of these black and white images the expressive potential my Auburn mentor Maltby Sykes had tried to show me a few years earlier. The process was a perfect match for my emotional state of being, and I felt as if I had been extended privileges in some ancient, mystical, order.” - from The Private Diary of Noyes Capehart
